The Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Society includes three local First Nation Bands: Campbell River Band (Weiwaikum First Nation); Cape Mudge Band (Wewaikai First Nation) and; Kwiakah First Nation.Their territories include the Campbell River, Strathcona, Comox and Mainland areas.

Each First Nation of the Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Society is represented by one Chief Negotiator and one representative on the Board of Directors.

In December 1993 our treaty group filed a Statement of Intent to negotiate a treaty with the British Columbia Treaty Commission (BCTC) and accepted the Statement of Intent as complete and forwarded it to the Federal and Provincial Governments.

There are six stages to the treaty process. Presently the Laich-Kwil-Tach Treaty Society is in Stage 4 – Negotiations of an Agreement in Principle. The goal of Stage 4 is to reach major agreement that will form the basis of treaty. Several chapters that we are negotiating are:  Lands, Forestry and Non-Timber Forest Products, Wildlife and Environment, Fisheries, Governance, Culture and Heritage.
